The Henry Royce Institute is seeking an outstanding individual to provide leadership to its Governing Board (GB).
As Royce enters an important new phase of its development, it is focused on delivering the National Materials Innovation Strategy, enhancing industrial competitiveness, and positioning the UK as a global leader in advanced materials research. The Institute is now seeking to appoint a new Chair of the Governing Board who will provide strategic leadership and oversight, ensuring that Royce continues to fulfil its mission effectively.
The Chair will play a pivotal role in setting the strategic direction of the Institute, working closely with the CEO and the Governing Board to guide Royce’s evolution in the coming years. They will act as an ambassador for the Institute, building strong relationships with government, industry leaders, research organisations, and the investment community. Through their leadership, the Chair will help strengthen Royce’s influence and ensure it continues to deliver maximum impact for the UK’s research and innovation ecosystem.
The successful candidate will be a highly regarded leader with extensive experience in chairing senior leadership teams or non-executive boards. They will have a strong track record in strategy and governance and possess the ability to engage and influence at the highest levels across government, industry, and academia.
A deep understanding of research, innovation, and technology commercialisation, along with an appreciation of the role that advanced materials play in shaping the future economy, will be highly advantageous. The candidate will also bring a well-established professional network that will support Royce in developing new partnerships and securing opportunities for growth and collaboration.

The Royce GB is responsible for overseeing the Institute’s activities, directing and influencing its policy and strategy. As well as providing oversight, governance and strategic input, the Board works with the Royce Executive Team to develop specific aspects of the Institute’s work, for example: helping build relationships with relevant organisations and groups, advising on communication and engagement strategies to raise the profile of the Institute, and mechanisms to accelerate technology translation.
