Imperial College London recently hosted a visit from Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister. The Deputy Prime Minister, along with a delegation from Singapore that included Singapore’s High Commissioner to the UK, Mr. Ng Teck Hean, and Professor Tan Chorh Chuan, Permanent Secretary for National Research and Development and Chairman of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research, visited Imperial’s White City Deep Tech Campus. During the visit, they toured laboratories focused on sustainability and health and explored opportunities for closer collaboration between Imperial and partners in Singapore.

Imperial’s President Professor Hugh Brady, Professor Azra Ghani and Dr Simon Hepworth welcomed the Deputy Prime Minister to the Campus. President Brady outlined Imperial’s global strategy and ambitions for closer collaborations with Singapore.

As part of the visit, Mr Heng Swee Keat visited the Henry Royce Institute at Imperial. Housed in the Sir Michael Uren Hub, the facility is equipped with cutting-edge technology, ranging from nano-scale thin film deposition and nanolithography to device patterning, material characterization, and device testing. It also features advanced instrumentation for surface analysis, including scanning electron microscopy and X-ray techniques, as well as a variety of tools for prototyping nano-devices.

Professors Stephen Skinner, Neil Alford, and Dr. Michael Leverentz led the tour of the Henry Royce Institute facility. Professor Skinner will be attending the upcoming Imperial Global Singapore event on Cleantech Partnerships for a Climate-Resilient Future in Singapore.

The visit took place to celebrate and platform the launch of Imperial College London’s first overseas research and innovation hub in Singapore, to enhance collaboration between the UK and Singapore.

Imperial Global Singapore is located at the National Research Foundation Singapore (NRF) Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE). CREATE serves as an international research campus and innovation hub, hosting interdisciplinary research centres from leading global universities and institutes, working in collaboration with local institutions.

Through Imperial Global Singapore, Imperial’s scientists are partnering with universities, industry, government, and third-sector organizations in Singapore. The Hub builds on Imperial’s long-established collaborations with Singaporean partners, enabling the rapid scaling of scientific breakthroughs and technologies for societal impact and commercialization across Southeast Asia.

The Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore commented:

“We are pleased that the CREATE programme has fostered collaboration. There is strong cooperation between Singapore and Imperial, and we share similar perspectives on science, technology, and innovation.”

President of Imperial, Professor Alice Gast, added:

“Imperial Global Singapore will allow us to deepen and expand our partnerships with Singaporean universities. Addressing the world’s grand challenges requires unprecedented cross-border collaboration.”
