In January 2025, twenty people were given a valuable opportunity to participate in our third annual National Training Course in Cleanroom Fabrication Skills, equipping them with the expertise to become the next generation of semiconductor scientists and engineers.
The training course, co-developed by the Universities of Leeds, Swansea and Cambridge, funded by the Henry Royce Institute and in partnership with the CS Connected industry Cluster, is dedicated to producing a national workforce for the future who will develop the next generation of semiconductor technology, supporting our proud UK semiconductor heritage.
Following two extremely successful years at the Leeds Nanotechnology Cleanroom, University of Leeds, the 2025 cohort was hosted for the first time at Swansea University’s state-of-the-art Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials (CISM), and in 2026 will move to the Ray Dolby Centre cleanrooms in the new Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge.
Each of the facilities house ultra-clean advanced processing environments where semiconductors – used in devices from smart phones to MRI equipment – are processed. Working in these ultra-clean environments for manufacturing and technology innovation requires very specific skills that are in high demand in both industrial manufacturing, and research and development.
CISM Director Professor Paul Meredith said:
“I’d like to thank the Royce Institute for their incredible support, and our delivery partners Leeds and Cambridge for all their hard work.”
Leeds Nanotechnology Cleanroom Manager Chris Wood, University of Leeds said:
“This course is vitally important because it’s teaching our next-generation researchers about what is needed to take materials and create a device which will have a purpose – whether it’s to make more efficient electronics, a new communication system, or a new medical device.”
