Royce Training: Thin-Film Deposition
06
March

06 March 2024 - 08 March 2024
All Day

This course will introduce thin-film deposition and analytical techniques for characterising thin films. The content explores physical vapour deposition techniques, and will cover deposition parameters, structural characterisation and the electrical behaviour of a simple device. Practical training will cover basic lab skills for working with the ultra-high-vacuum environments needed for high quality thin film growth. Through use of the Royce Deposition System participants will gain hands-on experience of, sputtering, molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Each participant will grow and characterise their own samples, including taking measurements of film thickness and surface morphology. The course will also include a short session on cleanroom fabrication to make a microscale wire from a thin film.

First UK Workshop on High-Entropy Materials
09 September 2022
9:30 am - 3:30 pm
The workshop is aimed at those with an interest in high-entropy materials in the UK, including researchers, academics and industrialists, and aims to identify and establish a UK community on high-entropy materials, highlighting areas of challenge and opportunity, and will create a forum for sharing ideas, and enabling greater networking and formation of new partnerships.
International Workshop on Structural Materials for Innovative Nuclear Systems
12 September 2022 - 15 September 2022
All Day
This will be the Sixth International Workshop on Structural Materials for Innovative Nuclear Systems (SMINS-6) organised by the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency.
Royce Student Summit
13 September 2022 - 14 September 2022
All Day
The Royce Student Summit presents the opportunity for the UK Materials PhD and EngD community to come together to share ideas, network and learn more about transitioning from doctoral study to the next steps on the career ladder.    This year, we are delighted to host the summit at the recently opened Royce Hub Building at The University of Manchester on the 13th and 14th September 2022. Where possible, we will stream and record talks, and offer virtual attendance to the workshops.
Material Characterization Additive Manufacturing Seminar
13 September 2022
9:00 am - 4:30 pm
The seminar will focus on the requirements and techniques used to characterise and qualify materials (and parts) for additive manufacturing - polymers, composites, and metals, followed by practical introductions from Netzsch and Malvern Panalytical to their key characterisation tools for additive manufacturing.
Transfer-printing for heterogeneous integration in manufacturing
15 September 2022
2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
The ambition of Hetero-print is to deliver micro- and nano-transfer printing as the technology for the versatile and scalable manufacture of heterogeneous materials, structures and devices. In achieving this, we will introduce significant new capabilities for the manufacture of electronic, photonic, and other systems, which complement and are synergistic with those of established semiconductor mass-manufacturing methods including vacuum deposition and solution processing.
Design, synthesis and application of next-generation organic semiconductors
16 September 2022
9:00 am - 5:00 pm
A one-day meeting on the design, synthesis and application of next-generation organic semiconductors.
