This workshop will engage participants in designing and developing outreach activities focused on atomic force microscopes (AFMs). It aims to inspire new materials science communicators, diversify existing outreach in the field, and help audiences explore materials science. The content will include presentations by leaders in outreach and experts in materials characterization. Participants will be challenged to build AFMs for outreach use and develop supporting activities to convey scientific techniques and knowledge to diverse audiences.

In this talk, Prof. Hunagel will discuss The AI for Materials Design Laboratory (AIMD-L) at Johns Hopkins University's design and implementation, with particular emphasis on the unique laser microflyer impact and x-ray characterisation instruments, along with the data architecture and handling that provides the unifying backbone for lab operations and its integration with AI/ML models for materials exploration.
