In-Situ Sensors and Measurement for Tribological Contacts
27
April

27 April 2023
3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The measurement of load, torque, temperature, speed, and displacement is common in many kinds of machines. However, most of these sensors capture data about the machine or individual components at a macro-scale. In tribology the important interactions, and the ones that really need sensing, occur at the micro-scale of contacts. For example, the actual flash temperature on a gear tooth, the contact pressure in a rolling bearing, asperity contact in tilting pad, or the film thickness in a seal. Sensing these parameters in-situ in a tribo-contact is challenging. There are several physical phenomena we can use; electrical resistance and capacitance, optical interference and fluorescence/absorption, and acoustic transmission/reflection. This talk covers some designs of sensors based on these physical principles and what researchers have been able to measure with them. The talk includes the author’s own specialist area ultrasonic reflection and a case study on a wind turbine bearing.

AI techniques in EM and XRM Imaging for materials science
22 May 2023
12:00 pm - 5:00 pm
This workshop is intended to bring together researchers in the field of artificial intelligence based techniques applied to SEM, STEM and XRM imaging.
Laser Shock Peening: why laser parameters are important
25 May 2023
3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Laser Shock Peening (LSP) is a cold, mechanical process of metal components.. By producing a deep compressive residual stress into the material, LSP improves fatigue life, increase resistance to stress corrosion and cracking/corrosion of treated component.
AI hub for Chemistry: AIchemy Open Discussion
27 May 2023
11:00 am
The University of Liverpool and Imperial College London, in collaboration with the University of Southampton and University of Cambridge, are developing a bid for an EPSRC AI hub for Digital Chemistry. This online open meeting on the 23rd May at 11am will discuss the outline of the hub, how it might develop an inclusive AI-using community and to shape the hub’s aims.
Stand Out Skills Webinar | Build Your Own Academic Website
31 May 2023
10:00 am - 11:00 am
Learn how to build your own academic website with Dr Lucy Whalley in the first episode of our new Stand Out Skills webinar series. Stand Out Skills is a new webinar series for early career researchers working in materials science disciplines. Hosted by experts, each episode will explore useful presentation, communication, or career skills for researchers which aren’t typically taught as a part of traditional education pathways for materials scientists.
Version Control with Git and GitHub - a 1 day training course
01 June 2023
9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Version control is an essential skill for a modern researcher. It allows you to work with others, develop code faster, and track changes to your own code and even writing. This course is aimed at those who have no or little experience of version control, providing a hands-on introduction to version control using Git.
