Events at the Henry Royce Institute

This symposium marks the opening of the Royce Battery Suite. This suite of equipment is available on open access for the manufacturing and processing of battery materials. It includes a glove box, planetary mixer, centrifuge, freeze dryer, shear mixer, reactor synthesis, digestion reactor and rotary evaporator.

This workshop provides access to new opportunities and innovative ways of working. The insights gathered will be used to create a valuable online resource for organisations and shared with you on completion.

This year's Harold Moore Memorial Lecture will be presented by the winner of the Tom Bell Surface Engineering Medal 2022, Professor Robert Wood.  

The Dalton Cumbrian Facility (DCF) is a state-of-art complex for The University of Manchester's Dalton Nuclear Institute, where academia and industry carry out world-leading research and deliver dedicated skills development programmes.

Royce is holding this event designed to provide guidance to materials technology focused spin outs, micro SMEs, SMEs and entrepreneurs currently or considering embarking on the commercialisation journey. 

Hydrogen is experiencing an unprecedented momentum, driven by climate-friendly and energy-safety policies. However, due to its peculiar physical-chemical properties, material compatibility issues arise: hydrogen embrittlement, hydrogen permeation, mechanical integrity at cryogenic temperatures and water vapour corrosion.

The event will provide a chance for PhD students to connect with peers working in materials science disciplines and experience a ‘sandpit’ format often used by research councils and funders to stimulate new lines of thinking for tackling complex research challenges. Participants will be tasked with exploring a set scientific topic, working within a team to identify the challenges faced within the application area, and then exercising their own expertise to devise novel proposals and solutions. These intensive proposal-forming environments encourage the creation of new collaborations, identification of barriers to success and mitigation of conflicting approaches.

Dr Chris Hamlett, National Outreach Officer for Discover Materials, will discuss his pathway through materials science and into outreach in the latest Stand Out Skills Webinar. He will expand on how his multidisciplinary research background in chemistry and physics helped on his path to making a career around inspiring the next generation of materials scientists.
