The Henry Royce Institute in collaboration with the Discover Materials Network* and the Institute of Physics (East Midland) will exhibit at this year’s New Scientist Live demonstrating the importance of surface and mechanical properties of materials.
Visit our stand to learn how important both surface properties and internal structure of a material are to its performance. You can have a go at trying to wet our Lotus leaf and try to burst a balloon on a bed of nails to investigate water-repellent surfaces and how the internal structure of chocolate bars affects its mechanical properties then use our tensile tester to experience how much force is required to break polymeric materials.
About New Scientist
Fifty years after the moon landing, discover why the moon still matters and explore the lunar surface for yourself. Find out how artificial intelligence, robots and 3D printing are transforming the future of healthcare. Explore the science that will save the planet and the technologies that will change what it means to be human. Discover the myriad ways engineering features in your life even without you realising.
Choose from a fascinating programme of talks from world-class researchers, as well as your favourite authors and broadcasters. Or let serendipity take you through five interactive zones where you’ll find something – and someone – to delight and inspire you.
*The Discover Materials group are a collaboration of the nine Materials Science and Engineering departments at UK universities. The aim of the Discover Materials group is to promote Materials Science and Engineering to the general public, to highlight the career opportunities within the subject and to act as a hub to make both teaching and learning resources easily accessible to pupils and educators.
