Royce recently hosted Sip of Science, part of the Pint of Science Festival, an annual worldwide science festival which brings researchers to the general public to share their scientific discoveries.
Sip of Science took place at the Royce Hub on the evening of April 9th, featuring a series of engaging talks.
The event hosted 11 talks in total, featuring a diverse range of speakers, including PhD students, researchers, and non-academic voices such as technicians and business owners from the Manchester region.
Topics covered a wide spectrum, including:
- Sustainability in beer production
- Quantum Year – a journey through the history of quantum physics, from 1.0 to emerging 2.0 technologies
- Challenges in nuclear energy production
- Nanocomposite coatings for hydrogen storage
- The use of biomaterials throughout history, with specific references to notable applications
- Conductive epoxy glues in aircraft structures
- Back to the Future – exploring the potential of fusion propulsion for interstellar missions
- X-ray CT characterisation of material failure
- Probiotic cleaning products
- Smart plastics – using catalytic agents to prevent material degradation
The event was a sellout with a great turnout from the general public, university students, staff, and science enthusiasts.

Royce will be represented at several wider Pint of Science events, with multiple speakers giving talks on Materials Science topics at Loughborough University and the University of Manchester between 19th – 21st May 2025.
