The Henry Royce Institute is hosting a 2 half-day workshop aimed at Research Technical Professionals (RTPs), or researchers whose role involves RTP responsibilities, in which we will consider the various challenges in handling data in materials science, such as: i) specification of metadata; ii) methods of compression or down-sampling; iii) data storage and retention practices; iv) sharing and tools for access. The idea is to gather perspectives on the above aspects to instigate discussions around working methods and best practices.

This is a joint workshop organised between the Imaging & Characterisation and Modelling & Simulation Research Areas in partnership with the National Technical Platform for Materials Innovation (NTPMI). RTPs’ travel and accommodation will be supported by NTPMI, and lunch and refreshments will be provided. While the full programme is yet to be confirmed, we expect a diverse range of speakers from world leading data platform infrastructures, alongside local esteemed experts who have established excellent data practices in their research, culminating in a panel discussion in the final session.

Registration for this event will close at 23:59 on Friday 21st March 2025 or when all places (30) have been taken. If you have any questions please contact james.anderson@manchester.ac.uk. Please do not make travel plans until your place has been confirmed, at which point the Project Manager will be in touch to organise this with you. Remuneration for any subsistence incurred travelling to or during the event will be made after the event has concluded.

Learning Objectives

After the course participants should be able to:

  • Explain the different challenges associated with Big Data in materials science.
  • Discuss current working methods and best practice in Big Data in materials science.
  • Contribute to a network of RTPs in the UK for advancement of Big Data handling in materials science.
