The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has opened a new survey for the UK materials business and innovation community to understand the landscape of commercially manufactured advanced materials in the UK.
The regulator is ultimately seeking to understand the health risks associated with the commercialisation of new advanced materials and to identify the most widely industrially manufactured materials in the UK.
Materials manufacturing contributes a large portion of the UK’s economic wealth, with growth rates in the commercialisation of new materials commensurate to their main application sectors, such as energy and healthcare. Emerging materials are predicted to have much higher growth rate than in traditional materials sectors, and understanding incipient health and safety concerns within manufacturing processes will support sustainable progress within the area.
The UK has a healthy community of start-ups, SMEs and larger business working to commercialise new materials in the UK and a strong evidence base delivered through the survey will support later developments in the project and create benefit to the national manufacturing community.
